My particular interest is in breeding Flemish Giants. I sell and buy

I am trying to breed back the colour and size they were 40 years ago; that is to say Dark steel and 15 lbs (6.80kgs).
Why Flemish Giants?
When I was a boy in Norfolk, a great many people bred Flemish Giants as an important source of meat during and after the war. There were hundreds and hundreds of sheds full of them with only an odd light one or a black one; almost all were dark steel and all of the adults weighed 14 or 15 lbs. (6.35 to 6.80 kgs).
If you read Exchange and Mart in those days you will remember seeing an advertisement every week by Jack Abbott of Thuxton near Dereham in which he advertised 15 LB dark steel Flemish Giants. I dare say that many other counties also had a lot of Flemish Giants, but Norfolk was my own personal experience. It was my Aunt Nellie Attwood from Westfield near Dereham that set me up, and I have been breeding Flemish Giants on and off ever since.

There are, of course, many other people in the Rabbit Fancy i.e. the show people, who know far more about Flemish Giants and their history than I do. The demise of the Flemish Giant to the few that there are today, could well be due to the introduction of the white commercial breeds which breed easily and grow quickly.
News and Projects
I also breed British Giants which are generally a little larger than the Flemish. I also sell and buy these.
My next project is to breed and develop another large rabbit called the Vlaamse Reus. This translates from Dutch as the Flemish Giant. (Reus means giant).
I hope eventually to develop a breed of my own called the Fenland Giant. This will be ideal as a garden free-range rabbit or house rabbit, or a combination of the two.
